Behind the leader, the title and the performance is a person

Through my work at World of Learning, coaching leaders, developing teams and supporting people through change, I am reminded of how much we carry that others cannot see.

Self-doubt. The pressure to have the answers. The exhaustion of holding things together.

I need this reminder too: sustainable leadership starts with caring for the person doing the leading.

On World Mental Health Day, the theme “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change” invites us to listen more deeply and let that listening shape our actions.

People with lived experience of mental health conditions bring valuable expertise. Their voices should help shape workplace policies, support and decisions from the beginning.

In my practice, creating space to pause, reflect and speak honestly is central to the work. That same care needs to extend into our everyday team cultures, through manageable workloads, healthy boundaries and the safety to ask for help.

What are you carrying that others cannot see, and what support would make that load more sustainable?

And as leaders, are we making it safe for people to answer honestly?

Let World Mental Health Day remind us that behind every role is a person who deserves to be heard, supported, and valued, even when they seem to have it all together.
