Women’s Month Reflections: Not every leadership challenge is visible

Many women carry what is often described as the invisible load. It is the constant planning, remembering, anticipating, organising and caring that happens alongside professional responsibilities.

A woman may be leading a team, managing a business, caring for family members, supporting colleagues and keeping countless commitments moving, often without others fully recognising the emotional and mental energy this requires.

The ability to carry a great deal should not mean that a woman must carry everything.

When we celebrate strong women without acknowledging the support they need, we risk turning resilience into an expectation of endless capacity.

Empowerment must include the freedom to establish boundaries, ask for help, share responsibility and prioritise mental wellbeing without guilt.

Organisations also have a responsibility to create cultures where wellbeing is not treated as a private matter or personal weakness. Leaders should pay attention to workload, psychological safety, flexibility and the unspoken expectations placed on women.

Sustainable leadership is not about constantly pushing through exhaustion. It is about leading with awareness, making conscious choices and recognising that wellbeing supports long-term impact.

Reflection: What are you carrying that others cannot see, and what support or boundary would make that load more sustainable?
